Kathy Karas – Artist Statement
From a young age, I found my joy in painting. As an only child, my sketchbooks, paints and canvases became cherished companions—offering a quiet refuge and a space to dream. Like getting lost in a good book, art was my happy place, and it’s still where I feel most at home.
Over time, this solitary passion became a shared one. I found a wonderful community of artists—my tribe—who inspire, encourage, and walk alongside me on this creative journey. Together, we paint, exhibit, and exchange stories from the heart.
What began as personal practice soon blossomed into teaching. When people started asking me to show them how to paint, I stepped into a new role—and loved it. I’ve spent many happy years guiding students through classes, workshops, art retreats, and even overseas painting adventures in Europe. It brings me such joy to see many of them now confidently creating, exhibiting, and selling their own work.
So much for being an introvert!
Along the way, I’ve had the honour of exhibiting both in Australia and internationally, including at Urbino in Acquarello in Italy and in Vienna. I’ve twice been a finalist in the James Kiwi Watercolour Prize and the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize—affirming milestones that continue to encourage my path.
Painting, for me, is far more than a pastime. It is a way of life—an essential part of who I am. Each brushstroke is an act of connection, presence, and expression.
My mantra is simple: Paint with heart and soul—for that’s when the magic happens.
My studio is located in the Shellharbour area of the NSW south coast of Australia
